Asperger Syndrome Assessment

What is Asperger Syndrome?

Asperger Syndrome is a form of autism which affects the way a person communicates and relates to others. This is how the National Autistic Society describes it:

"As soon as we meet a person we make judgements about them. Just by looking we can guess their age or status, and by the expression on their face or the tone of their voice we can tell immediately if they are happy, angry or sad, and respond accordingly. Not everyone has this natural ability. People with Asperger Syndrome find it more difficult to read the signals which most of us take for granted. As a result they find it more difficult to communicate and interact with others." (www.nas.org.uk)

Someone with Asperger Syndrome can encounter problems in a wide range of social situations.

Although Asperger Syndrome cannot be cured, a diagnosis often makes it easier for the person themselves, and also their family, friends and colleagues, to understand and manage the problem better.

How is Asperger Syndrome assessed?

The Psychological Assessment procedure for Asperger Syndrome usually takes 2-3 hours. In the assessment we are looking for a pattern of behaviours consistent through life, from childhood onwards.

The assessment has two parts. One part is an interview to assess your flexibility of thinking, use of language and communication, and responses to all kinds of social situations.

The other part is about getting a developmental history, including a perspective from someone who knows you well.

Why it is good to bring someone with you

It helps to bring someone with you who knows you well. Usually people with Asperger Syndrome find it difficult to understand social situations and someone else who knows you well can help you to give relevant information.

When will I receive the results of my psychological assessment?

This depends - you will usually receive the results within the session but occasionally they will be given to you a short time afterwards, depending on the speed of gathering any further necessary information.
